This year marks the thirtieth anniversary of Caterpillar’s first backhoe loader. This also coincides with the worldwide release of its latest-generation F2 series backhoe loader, which was launched at supply chain services company Barloworld Logistics’ Big Dig Day in Kaya Sands, Johannesburg, earlier this month.

Caterpillar Building Construction Products marketing manager Desigen Naicker pointed out that the lock-up torque converter of the F2 Series, which is mainly used in mining applications, provides a direct ratio between the power pack and driveline when in the roading gears.

“This results in a 16% decrease in fuel consumption and an 11% increase in average speed. The lock-up torque converter is an invaluable addition when travelling between job sites,” he said, adding that the F2’s upgraded hydraulics system provides improvements in oil flow for improved delivery.

He noted that the Cat 416 F2’s pump capacity remained unchanged at 132 ℓ/min and that all machines featured Caterpillar’s proprietary load-sensing hydraulics.

“Essentially, what this means is the achievement of high bucket dig forces, regardless of engine speed, thereby providing excellent control, while reducing fuel consumption.”

Naicker added that pilot controls provided low-effort operation, while allowing for switching between excavator or backhoe control patterns with the press of a button.

A hydraulic quick coupler for the hoe is available directly from the factory, while twist-to-disconnect couplings are fitted for all work tools.

“F2 models feature a restyled cab for a more modern look, which has been designed with the operator in mind, including enhanced visibility for the loader attachment when at full height. Except for the curved front window, all other glass areas are flat, enabling quick, low-cost replacement. Sound levels in the cab are now best-in-class at 74 dB.”

As an option, F2-Series units can be fitted with a radio featuring blue tooth connectivity to facilitate communication with on-site personnel. A new keypad security system provides added protection for the machine, and a choice of cellular or satellite technology is available for use with the ProductLink telematics system.

ProductLink enables machine owners to view near real-time machine positioning, use and mechanical health data through the VisonLink online portal. This capability forms part of Barloworld’s Equipment Management Solutions suite.

“Caterpillar’s backhoe loaders keep on working and are certain to continue playing their part in building the future for many subsequent generations,” added Naicker.

Caterpillar backhoe loaders command a global footprint, with 11 models manufactured at Desford, in the UK; Thiruvallur, in India; and Campo Largo, in Brazil. F2 machines destined for the Southern Africa region will continue to be sourced from the UK.
